Jameson Electric: Building a Family Legacy

We recently published an Instagram post about the benefits of paying it forward in business and in life. We decided to put our money where our mouth is and offer a profile article as well as social promotion to the local small business that garnered the most tags and comments. The polls were closed, and Jameson Electric was declared the winner! We were so impressed with the number of small businesses that were tagged that we decided to select one every couple of months for a profile article as a way to keep paying it forward in our community. When the dust settled and it was time for pen to meet paper, I reached out to Fatima and Eric Avila, the owners and operators of Jameson Electric. The family values, motivation, and moral character that define their business and, in turn, their family, quickly became apparent. As I learned, there really is no line between family and business with them. When you hire Jameson Electric, you will quickly see what I mean by that statement. Being within their orbit in any capacity means feeling genuine care and compassion, coupled with an intense desire to help solve your problems.

I feel that I need to make a disclaimer here. If you have read some of my previous profile articles, you may know I have a fascination with how small businesses come up with unique names. Full disclosure, when I first saw the name Jameson Electric, I did not think there would be a backstory there, as I assumed Eric and Fatima’s last name was Jameson. I could not have been more wrong.

“Our business, named in honor of our beloved son, Noah Jameson Avila, serves as a perpetual symbol of the deep-seated motivation that fuels our endeavor. We are steadfastly committed to shaping a legacy that will both inspire and guide him in the years to come. Our primary goal is to construct a business that embodies our core values and beliefs, setting a path that Noah Jameson might choose to follow in the times ahead.”

Life, it seems, always has a way of bringing perspective when it is needed the most. I was officially intrigued and had to know more. I reached out to Fatima, the resilient Matriarch of the Avila family. I was curious to learn how, within just a couple of years of their move to Prescott Valley, she and her husband had managed to become such integral members of the local business community. What I learned is that the American spirit of ingenuity, hard work, and independence is alive and well in the form of Jameson Electric.

Eric and Fatima Avila, originally from Artesia, CA, and Zacatecas, Mexico, respectively, found their shared home in Long Beach. Fatima moved to Long Beach with her family at the young age of 7, while Eric made the relocation after marrying Fatima. After several years of marriage and the birth of their son, they began having thoughts of moving. In an all-too-familiar story, life in the vast urban metropolis was starting to look less than ideal as an area to raise young children. By late 2019, those thoughts of moving had solidified, and the decision was made. They searched for a community of shared values and morals in which to relocate. They felt an increasing attraction to the greater Prescott area, primarily inspired by close friends who had moved to Prescott Valley years earlier. It was more than that, though. The decision to shift their family to the wide-open vistas of Prescott Valley was rooted in their desire to create a safer, value-aligned environment for their son, Noah Jameson. It was there that Jameson Electric was born.

“We may come from different places, but our hearts have found their home here. Prescott Valley has captured our hearts, and we feel incredibly grateful to be part of this vibrant community.”

When it comes to common electrical issues homeowners encounter, Eric from Jameson Electric highlights that breakers not working correctly top the list. He advises homeowners to routinely test their breakers annually for optimum performance and safety. If you are unsure, give Jameson Electric a call. Their honesty in diagnosing homeowners’ electrical problems is a core tenet of their business reputation.

‘Our focus lies in providing individualized attention, acknowledging that each customer has unique needs. We dedicate ourselves to actively listening and comprehending their requirements, which allows us to deliver customized solutions for their specific electrical concerns. We firmly believe that this personalized approach not only guarantees customer satisfaction but also fosters enduring loyalty.’

Choosing the right electrician, according to Avila, requires a thoughtful approach. Firstly, checking for qualifications and experience is crucial; evidence of certifications, licenses, and training should be looked for. The chosen electrician should have dealt with a wide array of electrical issues, demonstrating their ability to deliver effective solutions. Secondly, an electrician's reputation and reviews must be considered. Diligent research into testimonials, client feedback, and personal recommendations helps in assessing their reliability and trustworthiness. Finally, an understanding of their insurance and safety measures is necessary due to the inherent risks in electrical work. It's important to confirm that they possess suitable insurance coverage and maintain strict adherence to electrical safety codes and regulations. Avila stresses the significance of making informed decisions when selecting an electrician to ensure the safety and efficacy of electrical projects.

Put simply, running a family business can be hard. Fatima and Eric both underscore the importance of striking a healthy balance between work, life, and family. They admit that this balance is an evolving endeavor, with some days or weeks proving to be more challenging than others. Recognizing this, they stress the need for adaptability and urge themselves not to be overly critical during the learning process. This was my opening to ask, What guidance would Eric and Fatima of today offer to their younger selves who were just beginning their business journey? And, projecting a little, what advice do you envision future Eric and Fatima might bestow upon their present-day selves?

"Looking back, we understand that every event in life holds a purpose, and with unwavering perseverance, things ultimately align. As for any counsel our future selves might offer, my guess is it would revolve around embracing simplicity and placing greater emphasis on saving money."

Establish clear boundaries. Hone their time management skills. Foster open communication. Embracing task delegation and prioritizing self-care. This is the playbook the Avilas follow as they work towards creating a harmonious balance to their business and family lives. Despite the challenges, they maintain a candid and realistic approach, recognizing that achieving this equilibrium is often a task that demands ongoing effort.

When the Avila family has no work and no school, with beautiful weather to boot, there is one thing on their mind: Get outside! The picturesque landscape of Goldwater Lake is the family's favorite spot to get out on the water in their kayaks.

"These moments spent enjoying nature allow us to take a breath, connect more deeply with the world around us, and truly treasure the quality time spent as a family. It's these outdoor experiences that make living in Prescott so special to us."

When time allows, camping in their travel trailer is their go-to family vacation. For the Avila family, camping is not just about reaching the destination but also about the shared journey, navigating roads less traveled, and solving problems along the way. At the campsite, everyday distractions fall away, providing an ideal backdrop for meaningful conversations, laughter, and shared experiences. From setting up camp to roasting marshmallows over an open fire, these are the moments they try to hold onto, knowing all too well that time is fleeting and these shared experiences with family are what add real meaning to life.

Eric and Fatima Avila are passionate foodies with a fondness for exploring local eateries. However, their all-time favorite spot is the Founding Fathers speakeasy, Seven Six, where their preferred indulgence is an Old Fashioned, with Eric's preference leaning towards a double-smoked variant. They also hold a deep affection for Time for Lunch’s delectable fish tacos. When Eric surprises Fatima with a date night, being creatures of habit, they typically stick to this playbook. The important thing is to appreciate the opportunity to relax and enjoy each other's company.

"As the warmer weather approaches, our backyard often transforms into our family oasis. With refreshing cocktails from our very own backyard bar and Eric's mastery at the grill or smoker, we create wonderful feasts, from mouthwatering meats to Eric's famously delicious deviled eggs. We have a deep love for entertaining; there's something special about sharing meals that brings people together. It is our firm belief that a meal becomes even more delightful when it's shared with friends and loved ones."

In the Avila household, Sunday mornings are for brunch, and The County Seat in Prescott is their go-to spot, thanks to its cozy ambiance and diverse, delicious menu. If their beloved pup Loki is in tow, they head to The Barley Hound, a pet-friendly venue. For their coffee fix, the choice usually oscillates between Founding Fathers and the convenient drive-thru at Dutch Bros.

Typically, I would wrap up the profile with those last paragraphs about what they are currently vibing on in Prescott. But Jameson Electric and Fatima in particular give so much back to the community I had to work in an entire section to cover everything they are up to currently. To say the Avilas are active contributors to their community would be the understatement of the decade. Adopting the Tarantula Grotto at the Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary in Prescott is one such initiative. This commitment facilitates wildlife conservation efforts and educational opportunities for the community. Additionally, Fatima has positioned herself as an instrumental figure in various community organizations. She currently serves as the Secretary for the Prescott Chamber Ambassadors and also fulfills the role of Event Chair for the Prescott Area Young Professionals. Her commitment to community development doesn't stop there; she also acts as the Vice President for Party in the Pines. Looking forward to the 2023-2024 school year, Fatima has been chosen for the incoming Secretary position for BASIS Prescott Boosters, further demonstrating her integral role in community engagement and advancement.

"I spent my formative years in a small town in Zacatecas, Mexico, where I faced adversities that no child should ever encounter. These experiences deeply influenced my perspective, igniting within me a strong desire to give back to the community. Above all, one of the most fundamental values I strive to impart to my son is the importance of gratitude and appreciation for the blessings we have."

In addition to their active roles in community organizations, the Avilas offer their services to respected entities like Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, and the Prescott Chamber of Commerce Christkindl event. These generous contributions aim to uplift those in need and reinforce a robust sense of community spirit. They are also enthusiastically involved in local festivities, such as the Party in the Pines and Prescott Jazz Summit, celebrating their community's rich culture while also aiding in its growth and success. The Avila family views giving back as a central tenet of their identity, influenced by Fatima's personal experiences and their collective aspiration to effect change. Their dedication to philanthropy and their efforts to cultivate kindness, empathy, and a community-centered mentality in their son underscore their ongoing commitment to fostering a brighter and more compassionate future.
